It’s time to celebrate art in the fresh air in the beautiful Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota, Florida. The 15-acre gardens have been transformed into large-scale artworks, inspired by the work of Claude Monet and the work of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.

Roy Lichtenstein: Monet’s Garden Goes Pop!

Currently on view at Marie Selby’s Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota is a colorful new exhibition. Dubbed “Roy Lichtenstein: Monet’s Garden Goes Pop!” the exhibition focuses on Claude Monet’s paintings of his garden and surroundings at Giverny, France, but with a pop art spin.

For the exhibition, the 15-acre gardens have been magically transformed into large-scale artworks, representing Monet’s garden, but as imagined through the skill and aesthetic of legendary pop artist Lichenstein. The American pop artist was a leading figure in the new pop art movement of the 1960s, but died in 1997

Those who know Monet’s paintings of his Giverny garden will see familiar components in the botanical garden. For instance, the Japanese Bridge that spans the koi pond is designed to look as if Lichtenstein had painted it. These fascinating mixes of pop art and Impressionism have been designed to catch visitors’ eyes as they head through the gardens on the way to the Museum of Botany and the Arts.

Once there, visitors can admire Lichtenstein’s Water Lilies with Reflections series. This was a limited edition of large-screen prints that the pop artist created in the latter years of his career. The prints reinterpret the beautiful work of Monet’s famous Water Lilies.

Explore Lichtenstein’s interpretation of Monet

Jennifer Rominiecki is the president and CEO of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Speaking of the new exhibition, she said they are “basically saying that if Lichtenstein had created Monet’s garden, this might be what he would have dreamed up.”

Rominiecki added that, by giving the gardens the Monet treatment with “an innovative and playful pop art twist,” their visitors will be able to explore the famous pop artist’s interpretation of Monet in a variety of ways.

The new exhibition is the latest in Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ immersive Jean & Alfred Goldenstein exhibition series. The series explores the connection of major artists to nature and flowers.
